Douglas County District Attorney Suzanne Valdez today announced that a jury found Darren L. Henry, 30, of Topeka, guilty of aggravated robbery in the armed holdup of a local convenience store.
The charges stemmed from an incident that occurred at a Kwik Shop located in the 800 block of Mississippi Street on September 5, 2017. Henry pointed a gun at the store’s clerk while grabbing money from a cash register before he fled the store.
“We appreciate the diligence of the jury in reaching a just outcome,” District Attorney Valdez said. “Criminal acts, particularly those involving firearms, cannot be tolerated.”
Chief Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Tatum and Senior Assistant District Attorney Ricardo Leal represented the State. The case was investigated by the Lawrence Police Department and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.
Sentencing was set by Judge Stacey Donovan for 11:30 a.m. on February 16, 2024, at the Douglas County Judicial and Law Enforcement Center. Henry faces between 55 and 247 months in the Kansas Department of Corrections.
